I've received three responses from letters/emails that I recently sent to Council Leader Roger Stone, MP for SE Sheffield Clive Betts and Rother Valley MP Kevin Baron (his reply will appear when I've`scanned it).


Firstly from Roger Stone
 
Dear Mr Reeder

Many thanks for your email dated 3 December, regarding wildlife at the proposed Chinese Theme Park at the Pit-House West site.

I am aware of the site’s sensitivity in terms of wildlife and, as part of the previously approved YES project, surveys were carried out and conditions imposed on the planning permission requiring, amongst other things, the creation of alternative habitat for the wintering Bittern.

The Visions of China project is a different type of leisure proposal to YES, and will be sensitive to the environment.  The project is at a conceptual stage at the moment.  Clearly, it will require fresh planning permission and be subject to a full Environmental Impact assessment.  Up-to- date surveys will be required, but the project is not at that stage yet.  The site is under Council ownership and it has been the intention for many years to take forward a leisure scheme on that site, of national and hopefully international repute, which complements and supports the wider park.

This is not a Council scheme, but one led by the private sector, by people with significant experience in the leisure industry.  Ultimately, they will have to take a commercial view on the deliverability and sustainability of the scheme.  However, I do think it is worth noting that the day visitor market is one which has continued to grow and is resilient to the current downturn.

Personally, I am very excited by this proposal, but we are at the very early stages and there is much more detail to work through.

A rather more realistic response from Clive Betts (below).
Thank you for your letter of 3 December.  The theme park proposal has, as I understand it, already got planning permission from Rotherham Council and therefore, in terms of the general use of the land, there is no further objection that an individual, or Sheffield Council for example, could now lodge.

I understand that some issues of concern around the need to restrict the amount of retail development in the area have already been taken on board.  The real issue at present however is whether the idea will secure sufficient funding to make it work.  The proponents of the scheme are indicating they are currently searching for investments but given the current state of the economy and the fact that they could not raise the necessary finance in better times may indicate that no significant development is likely to happen in the foreseeable future.

I am sorry I cannot be of further assistance at this stage but essentially it is now a matter of waiting to see whether in reality the development is in any way feasible.

BITTERN RETURNS FOR 9TH SUCCESSIVE WINTER.

At least one Bittern is back at Pit-house West. First seen on the the 22nd October heading to roost at 18:15. Some winters have produced two birds and dusk is generally the best time viewing from the eastern end of the 'Bittern Pool' is easiest.
